What to Know About CBD for Pets

The CBD market for pets is growing quickly. According to Statista.com, about 48 percent of pet owners across the US bought CBD-infused treats for their pets in 2019, while 27 percent used CBD oil. You may be wondering what the big deal is. If you are new to CBD, read on!

What is CBD?

CBD is short for cannabidiol, one of over 130 natural-occurring chemical compounds called cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. CBD and THC (the high-causing compound in cannabis) are the most prominent.

Marijuana, which contains large amounts of THC, is considered a schedule one drug federally, while hemp plants high in CBD were legalized in the 2018 Farm Bill.  

How Does CBD Work for Pets?

Data is limited on exactly how CBD affects pets, but what is clear to researchers is that the body naturally produces cannabinoids, referred to as endocannabinoids, that interact with the body's endocannabinoid system. Intriguingly, studies say CBD may work in humans and pets the same way since they both have similar endocannabinoid systems.

How Can I Administer CBD to my Pet?

A great perk of CBD – there are several ways to use it. For your pets, CBD can be purchased in the following forms:

  • Treats

These are, of course, the most fun and stress-free way to administer CBD to pets. CBD infused pet treats come in different sizes, shapes, and flavors, offering pet parents a wide range of options

  • Topicals

CBD-infused creams and lotions are common despite all the fur. Topicals should be used with close supervision as your dog might lick off the cream.

Capsules may be hidden in pet food. CBD-infused pet capsules and pills resemble your typical pharmaceutical pills.

  • Tinctures

Lastly, you can use CBD tinctures for your dog. Tinctures are liquid form and are normally applied under your dog's tongue. If your dog detests the typical sour CBD taste, you may infuse the liquid into their favorite meals.

Will CBD Make My Dog High?

Simply, NO. Unlike THC, the psychoactive compound in cannabis, CBD won't make your dog high. The level of THC in full spectrum CBD products is 0.3% or less. This small amount of THC is not sufficient to cause a high when used correctly. In broad spectrum or isolate CBD products, there is no THC at all.
